Raising a Reader is a voluntary based book-sharing program that runs during the school year in an effort to improve kindergarten readiness rates. The most adorable concept is “book cuddling” – children and their families are encouraged to snuggle up together and share an engaging story. The 3 – 5-year-old children participating are enrolled in childcare sites all over Manatee County. Every week during the duration of the program, each child receives a red bag filled with three books, at-home reading tips, and book care instructions. The bags are returned to school, where the children trade bags with their classmates to experience a new theme of stories. The red bags and trading build excitement in the classroom, and the children are motivated to read!
This program’s goal is to encourage reading at home – parents and caregivers are key players in improving literacy rates. At-home reading where parents have created a routine of daily reading can help children begin a lifelong relationship with the printed word, so kids grow into adults who read easily and frequently whether for pleasure, knowledge, or business. Additionally, “book cuddling” encourages children and their families to bond while simultaneously fostering a love of reading that prepares them for kindergarten.
